SUE HAD ARRIVED AT BETH’S but told her she was sick and needed to go home. That was fine with Beth. She called Charles and told him she had finished all of Alexia’s notes and there was really nothing that would help answer their questions. She was really in a depressed mood and found it all very sad about Alexia.

Charles wanted to talk to her about moving her over to Elizabeth’s house to stay. He wanted to keep an officer watching both of them but couldn’t do it at both locations. He told her that since Sue had gone home, he was going to drive out to her house.

When he arrived, he was really disgusted. He had felt sure they would find something in the notes that would indicate a motive. Beth sat at the table running her fingers around the maze design on the cloth-covered book. Charles hit his fist on the table in frustration. He grabbed the book and slammed it down.

“Nothing! There was nothing in the notes that helped us. I am still no closer to figuring out what in the hell is going on,” he growled.

As she ran her finger over the design, she mentioned, “Look at the difference in the direction of the maze.” She took the pin from inside her shirt and laid it next to the book. The design was flipped. The designs on the pin and on the book cover were opposites. “Backwards,” she said. “One of them is backwards. They are opposite. See, this one has the loops curving to the right and the other one has the loops going to the left.”

Charles picked up the book and the pin and compared the designs. “Is that of any importance? We have read nothing that explains a motive for murder.” He squeezed the book like he would like to break it into pieces. He stopped.

“Get a knife!” he said, suddenly excited.

“What?” she looked at him.

“I’m going to cut off this cover. There is padding inside. Get a knife,” he repeated.

“You will ruin it!” she cried.

He reached in his pocket for his pocketknife but couldn’t find it. He started toward her kitchen.

“Wait,” she begged. “Let me try opening one small area on the inside.” She went to get a razor blade. Slowly, she made a small incision on the inside cover. All the while, she was thinking this was going to ruin the book. It had no monetary value but it was special to both her and her mother. When she had an opening large enough to slip her finger inside the cover, she gently moved around the edge of the back cover. To her surprise, her finger touched something other than fabric. It felt like paper.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Probably paper padding,” she said. “But it feels like a stack of loose edges of paper.” She cut the opening larger and tried to look inside. It was folded sheets of paper. Beth decided that she had to go ahead and cut the cover to see what it was.
